New Mexico signs medical malpractice reform into law
SANTA FE
New Mexico Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham has signed House Bill 99 into law, a measure lawmakers say addresses concerns about medical malpractice litigation and access to health care in rural parts of the state.
The legislation passed during the 2026 session of the New Mexico Legislature and took effect after the governor’s signature Friday, March 6. Supporters say the measure is intended to respond to concerns that malpractice lawsuits and rising insurance costs have discouraged some medical providers from practicing in New Mexico.
Republican lawmakers who backed the bill said the change was needed to stabilize the state’s health care system and improve access to doctors in smaller communities.
Senate Republican Leader Bill Sharer of Farmington said the measure represents progress after years of debate over the issue.
