Cameron Chapter members discuss public safety, communication

WINDOW ROCK – Cameron Chapter members are asking for more police presence after a recent shooting that left one person dead and injured two others.

A deadly shooting happened near The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints chapel on April 29

The critical incident not only affects Cameron residents, but also nearby areas such as Dził Łibéí, Bodaway-Gap, Blue Hills, Coalmine Canyon, Coppermine, Tolani Lake, and Leupp.

The Law and Order Committee on Monday met at Cameron Chapter to hear reports from chapter officials, community members, and law enforcement.

Cameron Chapter President Charlie Smith Jr. said he wanted more of his chapter members to share their concerns about public safety, but only a few people attended the meeting. A notice had gone out before the meeting.

Coconino County Supervisor Lena Fowler said a community resource meeting is needed for those who have been severely traumatized from the incident and to provide them with behavioral and mental health services.

Fowler said area schools were on lockdown that Monday. She was told students were exhausted by what had happened.

“What did we learn from this incident?” Fowler asked, adding that a meeting with the president’s office and other resources was scheduled.

“We need to get our membership at the chapter levels higher,” said Delegate Steven Arviso, who claims similar incidents regarding public safety occur within the chapters he oversees.

“Domestic violence is very dangerous,” Arviso said, adding that incidents like this could go anywhere and echoed that individuals do not want to be involved.

The Cameron Chapter requested information about the incident command system and how it reaches the local level.

In addition, chapter officials are working on putting together a service map and responding to the aftermath.
