‘Up in arms’: Former Nygren staffers say appointees have ‘no experience’ Part V

WINDOW ROCK – Worried about being audited more than anything else, President Buu Nygren’s administration staff members were “up in arms” at the Council Chamber during the fall session, according to former Nygren staffers.

The administration staff’s comment was, “If there’s an audit, we’re done,” said one former staffer. “Everyone (Nygren’s staff members) had their ears on that meeting.”

The Navajo Times asked George Hardeen, Nygren’s spokesman, for the Nygren Administration’s spending records (since Nygren took office in January), including all charges made by P-card holders, and budget at least seven times since Dec. 4. The Times hasn’t received the Nygren Administration’s tightly guarded financial information as of Dec. 13.

Hardeen wrote in a Dec. 8 email there’s a process to obtain records and to contact the president’s legal counsel.

Former Nygren staffers say Controller Sean McCabe mentioned he would not lose his certified public accountant license/permit/certificate over the president’s chief of staff. The Times checked the CPAverify website to see if McCabe is a licensed CPA, finding an inactive license.

The Times contacted McCabe’s office for questions. A receptionist who answered the phone said they “couldn’t” say when McCabe would return to the office. This reporter left a message requesting a callback.
