With all of the talk over how the $600 million of CARES Act funds will be spent, some chapter officials are starting to wonder if they will be left out.

Sponsored by Health, Education, and Human Services Committee Chair Daniel Tso, the override bill explains that the Navajo Nation CARES Fund Act only established the legal framework for expenditure plans.

The Budget and Finance Committee was the first stop for President Jonathan Nez’s bill (No. 0116-20) establishing the Navajo Nation CARES fund. It was approved 4-1 with two amendments.

President Jonathan Nez line-item vetoed the “piecemeal” Navajo Nation Council’s CARE Fund resolution. It was introduced a day after the Navajo Nation had received the $600.5 million.

In a rare show of unity, elected officials are actually finding common ground when it comes to spending the $600.5 million in CARES Act funds the Nation has had for nearly a month.
