FARMINGTON

Having to split a double-header with Navajo Preparatory School left the Wingate High School Bears with little complaints.

The Bears came up short 4-3 to the Eagles in the first game but dominated the second closing it 13-1.

Wingate head coach Chris Begay said with his fairly inexperienced group and the district season starting today, he’ll take the split.

“I’m happy that we got the split, I am happy,” he said in relief.

In the first game Wingate (2-6) had senior pitcher Garek Thomas on the mound and Yazzie said when that happens his defense has a tendency to fall back.

He said the team has a lot of confidence in Thomas and that could work against them at times, as it did in the first game.

“When we have Garek pitching we kind of relax a lot because we know that he can pitch pretty good,” Begay said. “I think that’s what’s happening, when the other pitchers come in they’re more alert.”
