Diné Runner’s Camp returns to Flagstaff

Diné Runner’s Camp returns to Flagstaff

WINDOW ROCK

The Diné Runner’s Camp is bringing elementary, middle school and high school runners to Flagstaff.

Camp director Lenny Esson said the purpose of the camp is to train runners at higher altitude while reconnecting them to Diné teachings. The four-day camp starts on Thursday and ends with a 5K and 1-mile race on Sunday morning at Buffalo Park.

“The main thing the kids will get out of this is training at high altitude,” said Esson, who coaches cross country and track at Kirtland Central High School and Navajo Preparatory School, respectively. “We also want out athletes to reconnect to the Diné way of teaching and reconnect them with Mother Earth and Father Sky.”
