WINDOW ROCK
There was some added pressure for Diné team roper James Arviso to perform well in the final performance of the Home of the Navajo PRCA Rodeo at the Dean C. Jackson Memorial Arena.
Arviso, 22, was being honored on Sunday night along with team roping veteran Leonard Williams Sr., as both cowboys earned the PRCA’s Resistol Rookie of the Year award 30 years apart.
The Seba Dalkai, Arizona, cowboy did not disappoint the Diné faithful as he finished a two-way tie for first place with heeling partner Chris Young. The duo recorded a 5.4 effort as they matched the same run turned in by brothers Wawa and Brandon Ben with the latter pair making that run on Saturday morning.
“It’s pretty cool to get recognized, “Arviso said. “I mean, I’m glad that we did good tonight where we made a good run. I surely didn’t want to disappoint these fans.”
Arviso gave credit to Young as his season partner, Levi Lord, was unable to make the trip to the Window Rock prorodeo.
