Diné youth finds his place in orienteering

It is said that most runners run not because they want to live longer, but because they want to live life to the fullest.

And that’s what Nakai Lake is doing, living his life with clear goals and exerting himself to the fullest within his limits.

Lake, 17, earlier this year was chosen as one of U.S. Junior National Team’s eight young men to represent the country at international competitions and not to mention to train at a high level for orienteering.

The Junior Team Executive Steering Committee announced Jan. 9 the team, which also consists of 11 young women.
“It’s definitely a different experience,” Lake said. “Nothing like this has ever happened to me.”

Lake says it’s difficult for him to comprehend that he has an opportunity to represent the U.S. And for it to happen, he must attend a number of training camps and at least four “A-meets,” events that have been sanctioned by Orienteering USA, per year.
