CROWNPOINT
The Shiprock volleyball team was pushed to an extra set on Tuesday night, but the Lady Chieftains were all about business in finishing off Crownpoint in four sets.
The set scores were 25-18, 25-21, 20-25, 25-9.
“I just challenged the girls to eliminate our own mistakes and to be a little cleaner, so I think that’s what helped us out a lot,” Shiprock coach Anthony Clah said of his team’s effort in the fourth set where they put down eight kills and eight service aces.
For the match, the Clah-coached team finished with 37 kills and 15 aces with junior outside hitter Taleah Phillips leading the way with 11 kills and junior setter Yonna Etcitty serving across eight aces.
The Chieftains improved to 13-3 overall and 5-0 in District 1-3A play as Shiprock has taken over the driver’s seat in the seven-team league ahead of Tohatchi, Navajo Prep, Thoreau, Zuni, Crownpoint and Wingate. Of those district wins, four of them have come on the road.
