Diné youth shine at robotics championship

HOUSTON, Texas – Looking relaxed wearing a straw brim hat with a red stripe, Cheyenne Williams, a senior at Navajo Mountain High School, walked with confidence around the George R. Brown Convention Center here wanting to get signatures on a flag she brought with her.

Robotics clubs from Kayenta Baker Middle School and Navajo Mountain High School represented the Navajo Nation at the FIRST Tech Challenge Worlds Championship in Houston, Texas.

A year ago, when Navajo Mountain first qualified for the FIRST Tech Challenge Worlds Championship, Williams lacked confidence and focus. She felt overwhelmed because of the sheer volume of competitors and matches. Returning to the competition this year, she was more confident.

Baker Middle School eighth grader Westar James and her “BMS Rez Kids” robotics team enjoyed the friendly competition from competitors from across the globe. She and her teammates intend to continue the robotics team at Monument Valley High School next year.
