After a quarter of online school on the reservation, the verdict is in, and in these divisive times, the consensus is remarkable: Hardly anybody likes it. Everyone agrees it’s necessary, at least until there’s a cure for COVID-19.

When Elmer Guy took the helm at Navajo Technical University in 2006, one of the first things he did was get a toehold in Chinle, which he considers the heart of the reservation.

At 7 a.m., Oliver Begay pulls his school bus to the curb on 9th Street behind Page Middle School. Begay and a helper, Thomas Hall, load a half dozen of the blue and red coolers onto their bus and leave, according to a Page school district news release.

In a due process hearing scheduled for Aug. 21, the Wide Ruins Community School governing board and administration will have to defend the school’s performance amidst ongoing allegations of nepotism, favoritism, unfair hiring and firing practices, and retaliation against those who dare to speak up.
