ZenniHome bankruptcy filing precedes hearing over $22 million housing dispute

A bankruptcy filing by ZenniHome came one day before a scheduled court hearing tied to a dispute over nearly $22 million for a Navajo Nation housing project, according to court records and attorneys involved in the case.
ZenniHome filed for bankruptcy protection in federal court in Delaware one day before a scheduled hearing in Maricopa County Superior Court. The hearing was set to consider a request to appoint a receiver to take control of the company’s assets and records.
The request was filed by Indigenous Design Studio and Architecture, known as IDS+A, which is seeking an independent receiver to secure assets, preserve records and conduct a forensic accounting to determine how project funds were used. Attorneys for IDS+A allege ZenniHome failed to account for nearly $22 million tied to a modular housing project for the Navajo Nation.
“ZenniHome filed bankruptcy on the eve of a hearing where IDS+A was asking the court to appoint an independent receiver to secure assets, preserve records, and investigate what happened to nearly $22 million in federal housing funds,” said Jake Curtis, an attorney representing IDS+A. “The bankruptcy filing does not eliminate the need for transparency. IDS+A intends to continue pursuing accountability in every appropriate forum.”
