The Page Sand Devils placed its five scoring members in the top 10 on Saturday during the 3A North Region Cross-Country Championships.

The Sand Devils finished with a low score of 31 points with Tuba City placing a distant second with 63 markers. Ganado took third with 68 points ahead of Chinle (108), Window Rock (127), Winslow (157) and Monument Valley (196).

“The boys ran good,” Sand Devil coach Tim Martin said. “We ran a certain way so that we could turn around and do another workout right after we finished our race. We’re really getting ready for the Mt. Sac Cross-Country Invite in Walnut, California, so that was kind of our focus.”

The Sand Devils were led by sophomore sensation Max Martin as he clocked in at 16:31.6 with Tuba City’s Kenyan Lee trailing nearly four seconds back at 16.35.4.

“He’s developing well,” Martin said of his son. “He won Ojo, and he’s been competitive in every race, and he’s been coming along really well.

“He’s showing strength and this past weekend at the 3A North, he just showed good composure,” he added. “He was just cruising with the front pack and then he made his move at the end, making sure he got the victory.”
