The race plan was to attack the hills and maintain a consistent pace on the flat parts of the 5K course at the Canyon De Chelly Invitational.
That strategy paid off for Page sophomore Max Martin as he entered the final stretch of the Chinle meet needing one last kick to outlast Zuni senior Jeremiah Eisenga for the individual crown on Saturday morning. The rest of the pack finished roughly 10 seconds back as results for the boys varsity race was not available.
“I could hear them behind me, and I knew that I had to get to the top of the hill before they did, and I knew that I would break them,” Martin said.
This was Martin second race for the season as he placed second at the Peaks Invitational on Aug. 29. On Friday, Page is scheduled to run at the Ojo Rojo Lions Invitational at Tumbleweed Park in Chandler, Arizona.
