Last Thursday, the 75-year-old Deschinny took overall best of show at the Navajo Nation Fair fine arts competition for her framed 3-foot by 6-foot “Vegetable Dye Chart,” displayed at Gorman Hall.

As the only two contestants running for the Miss Navajo crown, Kayla Martinez and Shaandiin Parrish had support from former titleholders to help them get through the popular sheep butchering competition Monday morning.

Seventeen-year-olds Sam Hasani and Shea Hueston are telling the story of the late Max Littlesalt’s life in the form of comics, a caricature that is recognizable to readers but true to their artistic style.

Horsemanship is deeply personal to Tom Chee and something he does not take lightly. “My dad was killed by a horse when I was a little boy,” Chee said. “I grew up in a little bitty hogan with seven brothers and one sister and that tragedy happened through the horse.”
